Saturnine - The Gathering

July 5th 2008 19:47
if_then_else - The Gathering
if_then_else by The Gathering

Atmospheric strings, rebellious guitars, piercing lyrics, dramatic vocals, a mourning cello, an eerie synth and bleeding piano await the listener in Dutch alternative rock band The Gathering's highly penetrating piece Saturnine. The song is an uprising and submission, an appeal and an oath all combined in one -- Just like the mood swings of being left behind in love entail.

The day Anneke van Giersbergen joined The Gathering was a milestone for the entire band. Hans and Rene Rutten formed the group back in 1989 and they hit the stores with their gothic/doom, debut album Always... in 1992. Their vocalists Bart and Marike parted ways with them due to musical discrepancies after the release. They were replaced by singer/guitarist/composer Niels Duffhuës and Martine van Loon only to realize that their voices did not match the band's music which had always been highly experimental. During the auditions in 1994, there came a young woman with a glittering smile and a voice as light as a feather. She was not only going to be the front lady of The Gathering for the next 13 years but also propel the fame and success of a moderate European doth/goom band. Van Giersbergen did not restrict herself within the borders of heavy metal and her personal interest in the alternative genre as well as bands like Radiohead was a perfect fit for the experimental nature of The Gathering.

Their next albums Mandylion and Nighttime Birds solidified their fan base while enabling them to play in front of various audiences throughout Europe. Then came an unexpected twist from the band which greatly surprised both the fans and the critics. They released How to Measure a Planet?, an album that carried heavy shoegazing and dream pop influence which caused second guitarist Jelmer Wiersma to leave the group. This startling direction was repelled by some fans yet gained the interest of many others.

Soon, they launched their own label and if_then_else came out in 2000. From then on, The Gathering kept excelling themselves artistically. Taking their name from the first Highlander movie where "the gathering of the Immortals for a final confrontation" is one of the central themes, the band has expressed their music on a wide scale combining elements of heavy metal, progressive rock, trip hop and dream pop. In 2007, Anneke van Giersbergen announced through her MySpace blog that it was time for her "to listen to her heart" and move on to other projects. Expressing deep sorrow and gratitude, she left The Gathering and formed a new band Agua de Annique. She has recently been touring Netherlands with her new band.

Saturnine begins with tenebrous beats, ascending from the depths of deep, dark, trip hop ambiance and relying considerably on synths. The lyrics find a lonesome woman whose rightful resentment wither in the cold, harsh absence of her lover,

"All the stuff you left me with
Is way too much to handle
But i guess you don't care"

Although the song begins in a relatively mild tone, it sure is the eye of the storm since there is a building tension underneath which bursts both melodically and lyrics-wise into,

"You don't need to preach
You don't have to love me, all the time"

This dramatic refrain is the highlight and the most touching part of the song with its intractable yearn for the presence of the lover even if that means to be alone in a relationship, living a love unrequited. Throwing off the ego away, abandoning any emotional need for that of the loved one is the greatest sacrifice one can make for another. Unfortunately, this kind of renouncement is rarely reciprocal and such feelings develop only throughout a break up or during moments of remorse after loosing someone who deserved much more. Still, while they last, the feelings and the overwhelming pain is as genuine as it can get.

"While whispering those words
I cried like a baby
Hoping you would care"

Saturnine is made up of four parts, each part depicting a different emotional state. The first part is the opening described above with its heavy indignation while the second part starts as the refrain is heard for the first time alongside heavy guitars, defiant drums and grave strings. This is where the pain turns into a revolt, where the craving for the beloved is unbearable and intoxicating. The third part follows this blow-up and is marked by a panting piano and grieving cello. Calmed down yet broken inside out, lyrics flow quietly as if one is mumbling to themselves,

"You don't need... all the time...
You don't need.."

Finally the refrain is heard again in a final explosion, illustrating a shouting sorrow and screaming teardrops both of which are in vain because they end up being unheard. After this last cry, the strings slowly take the reigns and carry the track to an unforgettable end while the woman is left falling back into the silent pit of her sorrow.

Saturnine is one of those rare songs that can vividly picture various levels of pain not only through a unique composition but also matching, striking lyrics. Briefly, it is the melodic form of falling apart in saying

"I guess you don't need me"

Into Dust - Ashtar Command

June 19th 2008 23:21
The O.C. Mix 6: Covering Our Tracks - Various Artists
The O.C. Mix 6: Covering Our Tracks by Various Artists

Base a song upon a mesmerizing guitar riff played as softly as possible and you are on your way to a relaxing plane. If your muse is really in its element, it can convey you a melody not only calming but also somewhat hypnotic when repeated over and over again. If that is the case and you have no intention of decorating your song with heavy orchestration, just the intense plainness of your melody and you, mumbling scattered lyrics of desperation then you have a haunting song. American dream pop band Mazzy Star's Into Dust is that song. It is rare, almost astral sounding and adorned with imaginary lyrics. Just when one thinks this song can't get any better, American alternative band Ashtar Command appears and takes it to an even more starry dimension. They so elevate an already dreamy song that the song becomes the dream itself.

Little is known about Ashtar Command. It is formed by Chris Holmes, Steve Fitzpatrick and Brian Liesagang, who also formed the industrial/alternative rock band Filter (Filter is known for the controversial single Hey Man, Nice Shot, their band members' appearance with Smashing Pumpkins in various projects and soundtrack contributions; check Filter's music at Spawn, Songs in the Key of X, The Crow: City of Angels and The X-Files: The Album soundtracks) Brian Liesagang provided samples for Smashing Pumpkin's vocalist Billy Corgan's solo tour as well as doing additional programming for Corgan's album. He left Filter to form Ashtar Command with former college pals from University of Chicago, Chris Holmes and Steve Fitzpatrick. Holmes also had a band called Yum Yum but he concentrated on Ashtar Command with Liesangang when he decided to leave Filter for good. Steve Fitzpatrick played with local bands like Farmers & Creeper, he plays the guitar and bass.

Among Ashtar Command's contributors are Matt Walker (former Filter and Smashing Pumpkins drummer), Kellii Scott (drummer for -now defunct- Failure and Veruca Salt), Ian Read (folk singer/musician) as well as Loise Post of Veruca Salt and Sinead O'Connor who sang the vocals for Summer's End, the band's second contribution to The Avengers Soundtrack alongside Solve My Problems.

On their MySpace, Brian Liesagang states that they are "getting close to finishing a buncha stuff for release", hinting a possible album but the when of it is currently unknown.

The origin of the band's name is an interesting side note as well. The Ashtar Galactic Command is a concept promoted by New Age believers, ufologists and contactees. They are believed to be an extraterrestrial organization and their prime contactor is known as Ashtar Sheran, the leader of the organization. They communicate through channels (mediums) to spread their message just like their counterparts. In 1977, one of the members of the Command, Vrillon, is believed to have interfered with the broadcast of Independent Broadcasting Authoity for 6 minutes and as is the nature of all such incidents, some consider it a hoax while others believe it.

Into Dust is featured at the popular TV show The O.C. in its original purity by Mazzy Star during the course of the very first episode when Ryan carries a drunk & passed out Marissa in his arms to her doorstep. It is then featured yet again in Season 1, Episode 7, and enhances the finale where Ryan takes an unconscious, overdosed Marissa into his arms yet again and carries her out of a dark alley in Tijuana. Finally, the song is reprised with its Ashtar Command cover at Season 4, Episode 83 where Ryan sits at the lifeguard tower, a special spot for the Ryan-Marissa relationship, all by himself and this time lets Marissa go out of his arms, metaphorically. With that, the Marissa-Ryan arc is complete and the song is featured to mark the end of the duo just as it marked their beginning.

The cover opens the same way the original does, with the part soothing part entrancing guitar riff that makes the song's backbone and in doing so, pays a tribute to the Mazzy Star version. It then introduces an oriental woodwind, a goblet drum, a harmonica and an emphasized bass rhythm to sustain its exotic flow.

The helplessness within a painful separation is polished with the opening lyrics which descend into,

"Still falling
Breathless and on again
Inside today
Beside me today
Around broken in two
Till you eyes shed
Into dust"

What was once one is now broken into two again. The unity, the union is broken. It feels like falling from a high cliff into an abyss, clad in each other's embrace until the pair hit the floor and are broken apart. The pain is unbearable but the end is evident. As love is smashed into pieces of dust, one feels like dying inside,

"I could possibly be fading
Or have something more to gain
I could feel myself growing colder"

Be it small or big, you leave a part of you in somebody else when you depart from a relationship. That part never heals entirely and always leaves a scar behind. One might not loose their heart alltogether but it never looks the same as before. The more relationships one gets to leave behind, the more marred the heart gets. Hence, the lyrics say,

"I could feel myself under your fate"

and highlights a bitter remark of love. Although the relationship is fading, one of the two still feels belonging to the other...

"I could feel my eyes turning into dust
And two strangers turning into dust
Turning into dust..."

...until there are no tears left to cry, until the memories fade into oblivion and the story has repeated itself for the trillionth time:

Once, there were two strangers who came together only to be strangers again.

Mother Earth - Within Temptation
Mother Earth by Within Temptation

Imagine a pixie dancing on the piano keys while accompanied by the lyre of a satyr and the voice of an elf in a lush green forest next to a serene lake. Add a gentle breeze that conducts a chorus of tree leaves and kisses ripples on the water and you have Dutch symphonic rock band Within Temptation's Never-Ending Story surrounding you in an invisible embrace. Amidst the song, one can find traces of Galadriel's wisdom, Arwen's love and Lúthien's timeless beauty.

Within Temptation was founded by one of the most powerful and beatific sopranos of the industry, Sharon den Adel and her boyfriend, guitarist, Robert Westerhold. The latter shaped the body of the band while the former breathed life into it, hence, the group was born with their debut album Enter back in 1997, receiving promising popularity in the underground culture in Europe. Having toured Netherlands, Germany and Austria, Within Temptation went on to increase their fan base gradually for the next 3 years. They concentrated heavily on live performances, settling with an EP, The Dance, instead of a second album in the meantime.

Finally in 2000, Mother Earth hit the stores and became their breakthrough album with trademark hits such as Ice Queen, Mother Earth and Never-Ending Story. It reached platinium in Germany and was an instant hit in Dutch charts. The pagan beauty of Mother Earth was a breath of fresh air and its fame quickly spread throughout Europe, opening new horizons for the band. They toured France and even found the chance to appear on the other side of the globe, Mexico City. The tour DVD of Mother Earth received the prestigious Edison Award, the Dutch counterpart of the likes of Grammys and BRIT Awards.

The Silent Force and The Heart of Everything followed Mother Earth in the coming years and bestowed Within Temptation with international acclaim. They also provided two video games with the magic of their music, Knights of the Temple: Infernal Crusade and the upcoming The Chronicles of Spellborn. Moreover, Mother Earth and The Silent Force will be officially released in USA in August 2008. A new album is in plans to be out in 2009/2010.

Never-Ending Story opens with a spirited piano that instantly paints the air in High Fantasy colors and sketches one pastoral reverie after another as it lasts. The lyrics begin with a depiction of life's perpetual circle,

"Armies have conquered
And fallen in the end
Kingdoms have risen
Then buried by sand
The earth is our mother
She gives and she takes
She puts us to sleep and
In her light we'll awake"

Many a times one wonders the meaning of life -- the meaning of their life, in particular. What is their purpose on this planet? What is their actual story? What are they to accomplish? Are they on the right track or have they just taken the wrong turn? Where are they headed?

We are all familiar with the simile of life being a stage and we being the actors. The Universe, being the theater, has a role for each and every one of us. Some more tragic than the rest, others are more in the spotlight, still others seem plain idle yet the keyword remains the same here: "seem". To be able to see the big picture is never an easy task and demands to think and feel outside the box. What one should always remember is everything happens for a reason no matter how small or big, felicitous or catastrophic they might appear and that it's all part of the plot, the grand play, the Universe is staging.

"We're part of a story, part of a tale
We're all on this journey
No one is to stay
Where ever it's going
What is the way?"

I believe it is befitting to tell a tale, told many a times in the modern world in those notorious chain mails. How unfortunate for a story so beautiful to be a part of the "send it to at least 10 people and your wish will come true" nonsense. Still, it is one of those rare gems that conveys the main idea of "Things aren't always as they seem" perfectly. I will humbly put it together from memory instead of cutting and pasting from the web. Let the story begin as the fairy tale notes of Never-Ending Story continue to flutter in the air:

Once upon a time, two angels came down on Earth and started traveling in human form. When the night fell, they knocked on the door of a majestic house in a rich neighborhood. Their hosts were a sulking couple and not trying to hide their dissatisfaction, they let the two angels in. They did not even bother to offer their guests some food and showed them the cold, damp basement to spend the rest of the night while they disappeared into their comfy bedroom. As the younger angel spread a ragged mattress on the floor for them to sleep on, the elder angel spotted a long crack on the wall and quickly repaired it. The younger angel was surprised with this gesture and asked, "Excuse me but why would you do a favor like that to a couple so unwelcoming and selfish?"

The elder angel lied down on the mattress and mumbled, "Things aren't always as they seem" before he closed his tranquil eyes.

The next night, the angels knocked on the door of a ruined house in a neighborhood reigned by poverty. The indigent couple welcomed them heartily, shared with them what little food they had and when the younger angel asked how they made a living, the poor man answered with a smile, "Well young boy" he said "Our only asset is good ol' Henrietta, our beloved cow. We sell her milk at the marketplace and that is how we manage to see another day."

When it was time to go to bed, the couple offered their bed to the angels, disregarding their oppositions and lied down cramped on a narrow, old sofa. In the morning, the younger angel was awakened with the sobs of the couple. Their sole source of living and their treasured companion Henrietta the cow was lying cold on the floor. The younger angel blinked his eyes rapidly and muttered under his breath towards the elder angel, "How?... How could you allow something like that to happen?"

The elder angel replied with an expressionless stare, "Things aren't always what they seem."

The angels did not speak again until it was time to fly back towards the heavens. The elder angel softly began, "Behind that crack in the wall was a hidden treasure. I fixed the wall so that the selfish, egotistical couple will never find and claim it. As for the cow... During the night, while everyone was asleep, the Angel of Death came for the wife. I offered him the cow instead. You see my dear friend, as I kept repeating, things aren't always what they seem."

With that the angels disappeared behind the clouds and our tale came to an end:

"We're part of a story, part of a tale
Sometimes beautiful and sometimes insane
No one remembers how it began."

Breathe Me - Sia

Color the Small One - Sia
Color the Small One by Sia

A penetrating piano tune that finds its way into the heart as it is joined by naive lyrics and balmy strings. Australian performer and songwriter Sia's Breathe Me is a bitter confession, a humble plea and a coy disclosure of insecurity, all combined in a serene 4 and half minutes. The piano captures the soul, the lyrics kiss the heart and the subsequent strings caress the body.

In Rainbows - Radiohead
In Rainbows by Radiohead

Xylophone, with its immaculate and naive sound, has always been a favorite adornment for the British alternative rock band Radiohead. However, it has rarely ever sounded this dramatic, this heart-tugging as it does in All I Need. Elevating the listener to a neglected, barren universe in need of affection, the song in its entirety is a fiesta full of engulfing dreams. It is the next generation Creep with a better ambiance and a music video to ponder on.

This Desert Life - Counting Crows
This Desert Life by Counting Crows

Featured in the Cruel Intentions Soundtrack, Colorblind is an exceptional ballad of emotional appeal from the American rock band Counting Crows. If their hit single Hanginaround is the high quality, precious diamond of their third album This Desert Life, Colorblind is the rare, round pearl. The lyrics are coy yet deep while the sound remains minimalistic, almost as simple and pure as the feeling of loneliness, itself.

Let Go - Frou Frou

Details - Frou Frou
Details by Frou Frou

Rising towards a relatively upbeat level, we are surrounded by the easy going Let Go by the now-defunct English project Frou Frou made up of Imogen Heap and Guy Sigworth. Both being talented artists, the duo's alternative approach to music is reflected highly in their only album Details released in 2002. Take a composer/performer/singer who is not afraid to push and extend the limits and collide her with a producer/arranger/musician who helped the music of sui generis artists like Björk, Seal and Mandalay come alive. The big bang is Frou Frou. Also featured in the soundtrack of Garden State starring Zach Braff and Natalie Portman, Let Go earned its place as an alternative and memorable piece.
