Another Chance (Afterlife Remix) - Roger Sanchez
May 25th 2008 18:57
A sultry piano riff, sensual beats, the occasional romantic guitar and the echoing voice of Toto mix in the shadows to form Another Chance which originally is a creation of American DJ Roger Sanchez but featured today with its serene and tantalizing version remixed by UK chill out producer Afterlife.
Roger Sanchez is a renown DJ of the Spanish island Ibiza which is notoriously famous for its hedonistic summers made up of endless parties. Not only ranked # 25 in DJ Magazine's best DJs of all time list, Sanchez is also a Grammy award winner for his remix of Hella Good by No Doubt. Another Chance is from his debut production First Contact and became a worldwide hit instantly (including #1 in UK Best Singles Chart) upon its release in 2001.
Afterlife (alongside Lux which means "light" in Latin) is the handle Steve Miller uses behind the set. Also an Ibiza frequent, Miller has provided various arrangements for the pivotal and exclusive Cafe del Mar series. Ever since his first appearance back in 2000 at the The Glade in Glastenbury festival, Afterlife has worked and collaborated with numerous artists ranging from Danii Minogue to José Padilla, the man who initiated the Cafe del Mar wave.
Based on a sample from Toto's I Won't Hold You Back, the track metamorphosed into a euphoric 5 and a half minutes in Afterlife's hands. He altered Roger Sanchez's theme into a longing piano riff and added harmonious synths alongside glimpsing key strokes to intensify the lulling effect.
Another Chance has a really simple but strikingly powerful music video featuring a girl holding her huge heart across the city during the night. She smiles and greets people around her but they stare back at her in confusion and walk away if not avoid her altogether. Still not loosing her hope, she tries to get inside a few cafes or bars but is not admitted inside by the owners and bodyguards because of the walloping heart she carries.
The video reflects the untouched, unstained heart every human being carries before it is broken and stained by love. Childish and naive, they keep searching for their significant other, holding their hearts out to those they believe in with hopes that he/she might be their missing half.
The missing half myth is originally set by Plato in his Symposium. According to Aristophanes in Symposium, men and women (plus the third sex hermaphrodite which was believed to be extinct) were originally a "rounded whole with double back and flanks forming a complete circle; it had four hands and an equal number of legs and two identically similar faces upon a circular neck". Being quite powerful, humans found no err in being aweless towards the gods. Thus, Zeus cut them in half and make them carry this memory in their hearts so that they would never ever forget the punishment they received and behaved.
"Man's original body having been thus cut in two, each half yearned for the half from which it had been severed. When they met they threw their arms round one another and embraced, in their longing to grow together again".
With such longing, humans carry their hearts no matter how heavy it might feel. They hope to reunite with the one they were separated from and even though they are rejected (like the girl in the video being denied entrance to various locations) or cast away (like in the scene where the police officer forces her to leave the area by directing her into a taxi) because of their feelings, they would still carry that heart however broken, disappointed or hopeless it might be.
Let down and discouraged, her once huge heart becomes small enough for her to carry in her hands and she is nowhere near the cheerful, hopeful and sparkling girl she used to be. Solemnly, she stands leaning against a shadowy corner, her face bearing the misery of her fading belief. All of a sudden, a guy appears and seeing her standing there all alone, approaches her:
Guy: Hello
Girl: Hello
Guy: You need help?
Guy: Who doesn't.
Guy: Is that your heart?
Girl: Yeah.
Guy: Big.
Girl: It's smaller now.
Guy: *surprised* Scary
Girl: *ironically* Yeah that's my problem.
Who doesn't need some help, some understanding, a warm, trusting embrace? Yet the game of love is ironic enough to keep misleading and confusing people. If they hand their heart out, the person they hand it out to usually finds this "scary" and either backs off and runs away in panic or urges them to "slow down". Others keep their heart to themselves, never revealing its true size to anybody but end up finding themselves the center of constant attention and obsession.
C'est la vie!
Another Chance is a calling to the missing half wherever they might be. It is a plea to come back and grow together and a whisper in the wind with the hopes that it carries the following to his/her ears:
If I had another chance tonight
I'd try to tell you that the things we had were right
I'd try to tell you that the things we had were right
