Colorblind - Counting Crows
May 18th 2008 20:40
Featured in the Cruel Intentions Soundtrack, Colorblind is an exceptional ballad of emotional appeal from the American rock band Counting Crows. If their hit single Hanginaround is the high quality, precious diamond of their third album This Desert Life, Colorblind is the rare, round pearl. The lyrics are coy yet deep while the sound remains minimalistic, almost as simple and pure as the feeling of loneliness, itself.
It is an olympian example as far as the power of simplicity goes. One might come up with a thousand adorned vocabulary to depict how it is to feel lonely but none would sound as clear and punctual as saying "I'm lonely".
The track opens with a sad piano partition which repeats itself all throughout the song and fills the air with currents of stillness the moment it starts. Later accompanied by a poignant cello and flute, the lament of the piano is further intensified. The broken, ambivalent vocals of Adam Duritz deliver the struggle to come out into the daylight and leave the dark depths of isolation behind, admirably.
The title ironically represents the vision of someone who hides deep within himself/herself due to whatever reason you might come up with. Many times, when disappointed, we tend to draw back into ourselves and find shelter in the arms of reclusiveness.
During those times one lives in black and white where everything seems dull and afar...
"I am colorblind
Coffee black and egg white"
Coffee black and egg white"
Still, there comes a time when the loneliness gets drowning and one can't help but wish for a helping hand stretched out towards themselves. Inside, one feels ready to come out of the profundity they hid themselves down to thus, needs someone to
"Pull me out from inside"
That magical someone the world waits for is the hidden object of Colorblind as well. The imaginary savior who steps in at the right time to understand, make it all right, soothe the fears and holds one out of the forsaken planes of their psyche is being called.
Hence, the song intones,
"I am ready
I am ready
I am ready
I am fine"
I am ready
I am ready
I am fine"
religiously as if mimicking someone who tries to make himself/herself believe that it is all going to be all right sooner or later. The lyrics deliver solitary confinement and the many trials and fails of life with,
"I am covered in skin
No one gets to come in
Pull me out from inside
I am folded, and unfolded, and unfolding
I am
colorblind..."
No one gets to come in
Pull me out from inside
I am folded, and unfolded, and unfolding
I am
colorblind..."
Every sorrow is the shore that harbors the next possibility for happiness. Every end is pregnant with a beginning. Hope is never-ending as it lingers all by itself within Pandora's Box. There is always light at the end of every tunnel all right.
Yet, now...
... just for now...
...clouds thicken, shadows linger, legs are pulled against chests, faces moisten and all that is heard in the dark is a single whisper of make-believe,
"I am fine..."
