Innervoice - Hooverphonic
May 16th 2008 13:27
Opening with an echoing, eccentric guitar chord that slowly approaches from afar, Innervoice is a song of sour happiness from the Belgian rock/pop band Hooverphonic. Originally from their debut album, A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular, the melody and lulling vocals of Liesje Sadonius are quick to create a soothing aura. However, the lyrics of this captivating piece contradict ironically with the calm flow of the track.
No matter how serene the intro might be the song opens with,
"Fear is talking
in my head consulting"
in my head consulting"
and strips us from some seaside dream to a place of uncertainty. Doubt is an astute feeling that does not know place and time. It is skilled in striking at the oddest, most unexpected moment, thus, either openly or discreetly ends up killing one's mood. If doubt is too deep, fear almost always accompanies.
"Could you be the pillow
that solves this problem?"
that solves this problem?"
If doubt is caused by somebody else, then subconsciously we ache that person to soothe our fears. We want them to let us know that everything is OK and even if it is not at the time, it will be sooner or later. Although some feelings are suppressed and eased by the rational, mature mind, fear (by fear, I mean any negative emotion because I agree with writer N.D. Walsch in the sense that human motion is rooted in two emotions, namely love and fear) caused by doubt almost always leaves a vague stain somewhere deep in side.
And that stain can only be washed away in entirety by the other party.
Until then, too much confusion and contradiction takes place within. One really wants to believe in the other person and needs some sort of reassurance. However, unless one reads the mind of the other party or is triggered by a sharp remark, they remain oblivious to the situation and the feeling subsides as the following lyrics imply,
"Sometimes I want to
close my eyes and trust you
But my innervoice it says
that I'm falling".
close my eyes and trust you
But my innervoice it says
that I'm falling".
Here, the song unexpectedly changes its mood as soon as the vocals murmur,
"Could you be the rock
that solves this problem?"
that solves this problem?"
and goes deeper, almost tunes down. It dons a darker cloak while heavy synth tunes begin rising and falling. It is a melodic emphasis, a successful tribute to the paradox one goes through across any form of doubt.
A part of you believes, a part of you wants to believe and the rest of you doesn't.
Thus, the question stands although the song returns to its original, dreamy glide before coming to an end.
Which part are you going to choose?
