Let Go - Frou Frou
May 17th 2008 14:31
Rising towards a relatively upbeat level, we are surrounded by the easy going Let Go by the now-defunct English project Frou Frou made up of Imogen Heap and Guy Sigworth. Both being talented artists, the duo's alternative approach to music is reflected highly in their only album Details released in 2002. Take a composer/performer/singer who is not afraid to push and extend the limits and collide her with a producer/arranger/musician who helped the music of sui generis artists like Björk, Seal and Mandalay come alive. The big bang is Frou Frou. Also featured in the soundtrack of Garden State starring Zach Braff and Natalie Portman, Let Go earned its place as an alternative and memorable piece.
The crescendo of the strings and the moderato tempo of the intro at the very beginning hint an outburst into the merry rhythm that creates the backbone of Let Go. Don't be surprised to find yourself accompanying the tempo with your head or feet. However, I strongly recommend you to keep the advice of the title, stand up, let go and dance your body free throughout the 4 minutes of this alluring track.
Although it might seem merry melodically, the song is a psychological revolt, a malicious wink from the edges of insanity against the hydras of daily life and the emotional tragedies surrounding humankind.
"Excuse me too busy
Writing your tragedy
These mishaps you bubble-wrap
When you've no idea what you're like"
These mishaps you bubble-wrap
When you've no idea what you're like"
We rarely manage to see ourselves from outside when drowned in sorrow or overloaded with problems. Self-pity is simply one of the many outcomes when daily obstacles outnumber human potential. Don't you hear that cute little devil on your shoulder whispering to your ear the following now and then?
"So let go
Jump in
Oh well what you waiting for?
It's alright
'Cause there's beauty in the breakdown"
Jump in
Oh well what you waiting for?
It's alright
'Cause there's beauty in the breakdown"
So you wave the thoughts away and keep on working but the boss starts yelling out of nowhere. You grit your teeth and wait until you go back home and fall into the soothing comfort of your significant other only to find him/her ready to start a quarrel over some detail you've never even thought about. Perhaps after a day that felt like it would never come to an end, your family who sit right across you on the dinner table seem to live gazillion light years away with their prattle. Your roommate is going through an emotional breakdown or suffering from PMS. The traffic is a mess. The towering bills dwarf you. The cat is in heat, screaming with an otherworldly cry as if you're systematically torturing her...
There, the devil taps you on the shoulder again:
"Yeah let go
Just get in
Oh it's so amazing here!
It's alright
'Cause there's beauty in the breakdown"
Just get in
Oh it's so amazing here!
It's alright
'Cause there's beauty in the breakdown"
Hence, you dust the devil off your shoulder, take a deep breath, close your eyes, count to 10, throw the reins, the etiquette, the rational away for this time...
...and dance your troubles away in the 4 minutes of a song.
